Read This Before Buying Your Next Mobile Phone

I often find myself wondering about which is the best mobile phone to buy under Rs xxxxx. Also, there are so many others searching for the same on google that when you start typing the query, google will provide you suggestions as below:

The above image means so many times this phrase has been searched on google that it’s now suggesting to me from the history. You might have seen this question already in many forums. You might have asked it yourself in some forums too. Let’s see what is the answer to this type of question then.

Disclaimer: I’m no mobile phone expert, professional reviewer, etc. All I’ll talk/write about is from my huge experience with these cute little (not little any more) devices.

My short answer to this question is – None.

Even in the highest-priced mobile phone in the world, you may find something that doesn’t meet your expectations.

Let’s consider from another angle. The smartphones run on software like Android. Also various apps needed to perform certain actions, which are pieces of software too. As long as there is software, there will be bugs. And if there are bugs, they’ll certainly hamper the experience of users in some ways. Let me know if you don’t agree with this. And that’s not the only caveat, think from the phone maker’s point of view, they design a device targeting a particular type of end-users, sometimes they succeed and sometimes fail. Even if they succeed, just the targeted group of users may like the device, not necessarily the rest. So none of such devices is perfect or the best.

Not just that, you’ll also find in the market if a phone is great in performance it may have a not so good camera. If the camera and performance both are good then maybe the software is buggy or the GPS is not powerful or it doesn’t have some important sensors to keep costs under control. And, if by chance you come across a device that ticks all the items, then maybe it would be unaffordable for you & me.

So now, what do you do? Should you not buy the smart mobile phones then? That’s out of the question. We’ve been habituated with doing so many things using our smartphones that we can’t do even a few hours without them.

I would advise, do buy yourself a smart mobile phone, but first think what exactly you want from your phone, prioritize your requirements and then finalize a model on that basis. Let’s take some examples:

Gamer: If you’re a gamer and mostly spend your free time playing high-end games on your smartphone, you would need great processing power, lots of RAM & internal storage, good sound output and of course battery backup.

Working Professional: Most of the times you’ll use your device to check emails, maybe little browsing, and some youtube videos and some calling. If that’s all you do then most probably you need a device with decent battery backup, moderate processing power, good call quality and good connectivity.

Tech Savvy: These guys are normally never happy with the default functionality of a phone. Hence they would like a phone where they can install their own choice of android OS, make customizations that are unthinkable for a non-geek user. They would like a phone that’s powerful and also the warranty shouldn’t be voided if jailbroken/rooted (this means heavy customization which is also risky).

Me: My expectations from my ideal phone is almost impossible to meet. I like small size, my palms are comparatively smaller so I’m most comfortable with 5″ phones. Excellent camera performance, excellent battery backup, lag-free performance (read as smooth), great GPS, powerful enough with ample internal memory and RAM because I use a lot of apps for various purposes, mustn’t cost more than Rs 20k, must be running pure android and not a customized OS. What’s left out!!

As you can see above there is no best phone out there, you need to select one depending on your requirements.

My Addiction to Technology.

I keep hearing everyday within my family, my friend circle and everyone else that I meet regularly, about my addiction to tech gadgets. Let’s give it some thought to see how true is that. Oxford dictionary quotes “ The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance or activity “. Cambridge dictionary days “ An inability to stop doing our using something, especially something harmful “. Look at the second definition, it also says “something harmful”, which is a very relative thing. Horse riding can be very harmful for some whereas it’s the bread and butter for a jockey or a Polo player. Operating the blast furnace of a steel plant can be extremely dangerous, but it’s the job for the operator. A priest goes to temple everyday and spends most of the day there, is he addicted to it? My father used to go to work everyday, was he addicted too? Nope, they were doing their jobs. Fair enough, then how can anyone call m...

Teachings from The Mahabharata #001

In Mahabharata yuddha Bheem killed Duryodhan by hitting his thigh as per the suggestion of Lord Krishna. Duryodhan was deciple of Lord Balarama, the mightly elder brother of Lord Krishna. Hence Balarama became furious when he heard this news and rushed in to kill Bheem. However Lord Krishna intervened and told him - "Brother, if you're so worried about the rules being broken": 1. Then where were you when Dusashana pulled Draupadi into the Kuru Sabha by her hair? 2. Where were you when Dusashana tried to take her Saree off? 3. Where were you when Duryodhana was bursting out in laughter on above act of Dusashana? 4. Where were you when Duryodhana denied to give even 5 villages to the Pandavas? If you didn't speak a word on any of the above occasions, then you've no right to kill Bheem now. Moral of the story - you must take a side in a "Dharma Yuddha", can't just sit on the fence and later shout 'injustice'.
